(Click with caution: very strong language from the outset, NSFW) It turns out that some users of streaming video service Justin.tv will turn a video camera on their telly, and do "alternative" commentaries on football matches. I'm a Rangers fan, but still find this alternative description of the last Old Firm match memorable. Alan, a Celtic-supporting friend who sent me the link, reflects: "For 100 years the Celtic have claimed the intellectual high ground over the Rangers. Discuss in the light of this clip." I say: in this age of user-generated content, maybe all commentary will sound like this one day. [Mrs Tosh adds: "he sounds just like you when you're watching an Old Firm match. Don't kid yourself."]

"By way of background, I was a partner in a tech-focused investment bank in the 1990s and became fascinated by the behavior I observed during the internet bubble, particularly that of my partners, who ignored my warnings in late 1999 that the end was near [so much so] that I returned to academia, got a PhD in psychology, and now teach a class in behavioral economics at Columbia Business School while conducting research on bubbles."

Craig McGill thought this on Jan 05 09 at 1:03 pmI saw something similar to that commentary a while ago and thought it would be great to have three channels for each game – one neutral and one for each side – but was told that to do it outwith the authorised content provider (Setanta, Sky, etc) would be setting you up for breach of copyright. Also the clubs might not be too happy with some of the comments that are made…
It’s great, but again it comes back to old media not seeing an opportunity of the new – or being too brand protective. (see also the continuing middle classing of football – an argument that’s more than a decade old. Heck, it was old when I wrote about it in
Football Inc.)
