• Martin Belam’s been doing all manner of stat analysis on RSS readership of blogs as counted by Bloglines. He took a look at newspaper blogs last week, and journobloggers this week. Delighted to see the Guardian blogs occupying the Champions League spots in the former table, and surprised to see this blog in the running for a UEFA spot in the latter. Given the sporadic nature of performances here, I’d have expected relegation. I suspect, in this particular race, you accumulate a certain number of subscriptions over time. And the nature of the audience matters a fair amount too - remember folks, RSS isn’t for the mainstream. That’s the only way to explain why Guardian Sports blog - which has a huge audience in the real world - trails far behind the Technology blog, my old parish, which has a somewhat more niche crowd but still tops the Bloglines chart. Still bigger than anything the competition’s doing, mind you.
  • That said, Douglas McLennan, editor of artsjournal.com, takes newspaper industry digital innovation outside for a right good kicking, in the wake of all this Google bobbins. At an industry level it’s hard to argue with his points.
  • Time for change, all round. I’ve been meaning to redesign here for ages. Has anyone used this crowd?
  • With colleagues I’m bogging off to collect a Webby in New York next week. Going? Do say hello.

Did you bother contacting http://xhtmlized.com/ or not Neil? I’d never heard of them before and have been pondering their service since I read about this post.

I haven’t, yet. I’m pondering what to do with m’blog overall… I’d like something very different, but may need both design and technical help to do what I want to do. And, what with Big Project ‘n’ all, I just haven’t got time at the mo…

Well, good luck with it. FWIW I do think even the most modest of personal blogs need 6 monthly overhauls. However, the more you overhaul in Typepad - even at Pro level - the more you realise how limiting it is without a rather good grasp of html and cms and etc.
