If it’s for straightforward interviews or suchlike then the Edirol gets my vote, although we actually use them and the M-Audios. But you can’t beat the former’s ease of use, and they’re much more rugged than the R-01s that preceeded them.

That makes sense. The reason I was asking was that I am in the process of buying some podcast/audio equipment and am deciding between something like the Edirol R-09, the M-Audio Microtrack and the Zoom H4 recorder… so I figured the Guardian would be using a nice on-the-go device along those lines.

Cynom – we’ve got a variety of devices on the go. It really depends on the circumstances, and the number of people/things we need to record.
