Mixed message?

I can’t decide if these two elements of the front page of today’s Daily Mail website are an unfortunate accidental juxtaposition, or a piece of editing brilliantly in line with the Daily Mail’s values. You could put your answers on a postcard, but the comments field would be faster…

Deliberate, and clever. If the Mail had simple, consistent pearls of wisdom to impart to its readers then they could learn them easily and go elsewhere. Much more clever is to confidently deliver strong but subtly inconsistent messages. The reader will gather that there is something vitally important to be learnt here, but the full clarity of the messages will be tantalisingly out of reach. Thinking the failing is theirs, they will keep buying successive copies in the hope of demystifying their view and gaining True Insight.

I believe religious cult leaders work on a similar principle.

Or merely pandering to the apparently insatiable desire for any ‘bad’ gossip about minor celebrities and using ‘weight problems’ as a coherence factor. As someone who doesn’t read the Daily Mail – perhaps they wouldn’t expect me to be impressed!

I believe that the DM’s philosophy, as so perfectly summed up here, can be described as:

    “Women – know your place!”

All that then remains is for said ladies to realise that their place as assigned by DM is at home, ensuring that their weight is neither too great nor too little.

As for “Charlotte struggling with her weight again” – what’s the “again”? And what’s the struggle?

Not at all Tosh i think charlotte church looks very tasty indeed. There is nothing wrong with a woman having a bit of meat on her and charlotte is anything but fat. Fit is the word i would use mate.

The Sun got themselves in a similar froth reporting Charl’s growing bosom, while at the same time (and once i believe over the same 2 page spread), continuing their hunt for paedophiles

As a former Daily Mail showbiz reporter I can say that this is classic Dacre. It is deliberate and yet they are completely blind to the hypocrisy of it at the same time.
