- What does the Guardian sound like?
That’s the question that’s been losing me sleep since autumn last year.
As previously trailed, I’ve been working on building our audio abilities at Guardian Unlimited. We’ve been building a studio, buying equipment for reporters, getting training done for dozens of staff and hiring producers to pull everything together.
Emily Bell, the boss, announced yesterday [...]
- Planet Hearts
I’m gatecrashing someone else’s launch today, writing from the cosy offices of Planet Hearts. It’s a new launch from my old mucker Shaun Milne; an unofficial, fan-powered newspaper for fans of Hearts, the Edinburgh football team doing rather well in the Scottish Premierleague at the moment.
Happily, and unlike some club newspapers that have gone [...]
- Launch day
It’s time to stop talking, and start… umm… talking. Comment is free, our new superblog, launches today, bringing some of the sharpest minds to the blogosphere for the first time. We’ve got a remarkable list of contributors lined up to make their blogging bows as the week goes on.
Thus far, everything about this has been [...]
- Football stars of yesteryear
We hope to move house soon. The toil began today, shifting some books into boxes, and into storage. Damn Changing Rooms, and fussy buyers.
Trouble is, when I’m shifting books, I’ll only end up reading them. Take this little gem - and see if you can guess when it was written. The answer’s after the jump.
“The [...]
- Guilty pleasures
Alexis Petridis has a fascinating piece in the G on the resurgence of soft rock, and the re-emergence of “its fluffy-haired fans”.
“Two weeks ago, club night Guilty Pleasures - founded on DJ Sean Rowley’s previously verboten love for David Essex and the Doobie Brothers, Christopher Cross and the Captain and Tenille - pulled 1,600 people [...]

This year’s designer of the year show at the Design Museum in London features a very strong shortlist of four. I particularly liked the stuff [...]
- “Disable comments 90% of the time”
May I just break radio silence long enough to note an interesting post by Jeremy Keith, on comments and community. Don’t agree with it all - at least, not when applied to the situations I deal with - but he raises some useful points.
Should we abandon comments completely then? Absolutely not! I’m a great believer [...]
- We asked for the Apple media centre…
we got something that looks a bit like one of those pre-Macworld Photoshop mockups stuck together by one of those Apple fanboys. As well as being ugly, the new iPod Hifi, at £249, costs rather more than the lead that runs out my amplifier, which does the job of connecting iPod to speakers at the [...]
- Ginny finds a decent photographer, at last

She rules all, originally uploaded by Ben Hammersley.
Mr Hammersley was round for pancakes last night (and… er… a quantity of red wine), and took this picture of Ginny with a lens that was bigger [...]
