Newsblog on the death of John Peel

I’ve read a lot today on the sad news of John Peel’s death. He always struck me as someone who understood, and demonstrated in everything he did, that even the biggest media could be wonderfully, powerfully democratic.

One of my favourite tributes – one that seems to capture all you’d hope to hear about Peel – comes from my colleague at GU, Jon Dennis. He writes on Newsblog this afternoon:

“One of the biggest thrills of my life was getting my own records played on his show [...] To hear that familiar voice say our name felt like a seal of approval and cool; and I knew all the other listeners felt the same affection and respect for Peelie. He was a true arbiter of taste.”

Do go read the whole thing.

Update: More nice stuff, this time from Blogjam.
