Running one of the few sites on the web that only really worked on a Mac and Safari was a scream for a while. No, really, it was – although the interview requests were rather thin on the ground. But ultimately it became clear that:
(i) Most people reading this site thought it was decorated with a large block of white space at the top of the front page
(ii) They thought this was a bit crap.
So: back into Typepad, and a new template: broadly similar to the last one, but for three important changes. First, the width is fixed, which I think looks neater and (two) allows the image to be fixed atop the page without (three) bringing my non-existent CSS skillz into play. Which, in turn, means the bloody image shows to users of Internet Explorer and suchlike.
[Update: or does it? Got a strange result when testing in IE for Windows on Virtual PC, where I had to hit refresh for the CSS to work properly... feedback from Windows-using readers would be very welcome.]

Well, as you asked so nicely I fired up IE and it is displaying ok there now… but firefox is not displaying it – the whole Banner Div is not there.
This is from pre-luddite win98, if you’re really lucky I’ll check from work tommorrow on win2k.
Nothing at the top of the page on Safari now, Neil – just straight in to the top item. And here was I one of the few……
Tip for Safari users who have looked at this site in the past: try going to the Safari menu and choosing empty cache. That might purge your system of the old stylesheet that’s causing the problem. To Claire – thanks for checking! Firefox on OSX works OK…
No probs – it works fine on Firefox under Win2k as well, so it’s probably only a problem for people who are too cheap/poor to update their systems
and I’m happy enough only seeing the logo at work until I move house and buy a PC that actually GOES.
It works fine on IE 5.X under both 98 and 2k, and also looks dandy viewed via notes6 on 2k.
I think that counts as cross browser compatible…
Emptying the cache worked, thanks – as you knwe it would, I suppose. We live and learn….
